Commodity Codes

Tariff Classification codes are reissued every five years and so this year, 2017, will see the Harmonised System (HS) commodity code amendments introduced from January 1st. It is good compliance practice to check your Tariff Classification Codes at the beginning of each year, in order to ensure that your goods are classified correctly and that your are paying the right levels of UK Import Duty. Failure to ensure your goods are declared properly can lead to heavy penalties being imposed on you by HMRC. MIES can offer help and assistance in the commodity code classification process. Changes to GSP Origin Rules

From January 2017, major changes were introduced regarding the way companies use the General System of Preferences Scheme (GSP). A new system of registration is being adopted called the Registered Exporter Scheme (REX). Effectively EU Exporters sending out raw materials from EU to be used to produce goods in a GSP beneficiary country and companies manufacturing goods for shipment from a GSP beneficiary country to EU, will have to register with their respective local authorities to use the REX procedure going forward. Upon successful registration, the companies concerned are issued with a registration number that needs to appear on all commercial documentation. In place of a GSP Certificate,
