PREPARING FOR A NO DEAL BREXIT - IMPORTS

In preparation for a No Deal Brexit, HM Government have issued guidelines to aid UK businesses in the unlikely event that the UK leaves the EU without any Trade Agreement in place. You need to be aware of the following Key Actions under items 1 – 15 below that will need to be carried out in order to continue trading with the EU in the event of a No Deal Brexit.

The bullet points below are for advice and guidance only and HM Government will advise when the time is right for UK Importers to take a course of action.

KEY ACTIONS

  1. Ensure you have an EORI Number

  2. Ensure you have the right Commodity Code

  3. Determine and declare the correct Value of your goods

  4. Ensure you select the right Customs Procedure Code (CPC)

  5. Ensure your goods are not prohibited or restricted in any way

  6. Ensure you have the correct origin of your goods

  7. Ensure you provide a Commercial Invoice & Packing List, along with any other import documents such as a GSP Certificate or Cert of Origin

  8. Check eligibility for Customs Special Procedures

  9. Ensure you keep accurate import records and files for customs audit purposes

  10. Your imported goods MUST be declared to HMRC prior to delivery

  11. Your imported goods will only be released once all UK taxes have been paid

  12. Ensure that you appoint a Professional Freight Forwarder

  13. If you appoint a third party to look after your import customs compliance, do so in writing

  14. Ensure you outline whether the third party is empowered to act as DIRECT or INDIRECT Representative.

  15. If you choose to prepare your own customs entries, ensure you have adequately trained personnel available.
